The do’s and don’ts when wearing contact lenses.

Contact lenses can be tricky, particularly when you first start wearing them. Whether you are

used to wearing contact lenses or thinking of trying them for the first time, we have put together a handy list of do’s and don’ts when wearing contact lenses to ensure your eyes remain healthy.

DO’S:

  • Before touching your eyes make sure you wash your hands, and ensure they are clean and dry.

  • If your eyes are feeling uncomfortable or painful, refrain from wearing your contact lenses and be sure to consult your optician.

  • Be sure to remove your contact lenses before going to sleep, unless you have been advised otherwise by your optician.

  • Make sure you attend regular contact lens check-ups with your optician.

  • Keep an up-to-date pair of glasses handy in case you cannot wear your contact lenses, or if you need to remove your lenses for some reason during the day.

DON’T:

  • Do not share your contact lenses with anyone, either your own or someone else’s. Contact lenses are prescribed on an individual basis, what is correct for you might not be correct for anyone else.

  • Do not use water or saliva to clean/store or wet your lenses at any time, only the contact lens solution provided to you by your optician is suitable for this.

  • Never use daily disposable lenses more than once, the clue is in the name “daily disposable”. These lenses are not designed to be worn multiple times, if you do so you could be damaging your eye health.

  • Don’t continue to wear your lenses if they are damaged or feel uncomfortable to wear, make sure you call your optician if you experience this often, there are things we can do to help.

  • Never go swimming in contact lenses, and if your lenses come into contact with water, make sure you throw them away and wear a fresh pair. Water and contact lenses do not mix and could potentially damage your eye health.

If you have any questions or queries regarding any of the above information, feel free to contact us, we would be happy to help.
